Some of you have asked me to print some of the emails I receive about the newsletter. Here are a few I particularly like:

I am currently at my home in India where I have been since just before Christmas. Living here in my house by the sea is a sharp contrast to my time in Nantucket, though both have their joys. I have been teaching English to the local school kids here for the past few weeks, boy are they great to teach, attentive, enthusiastic and eager to learn….Shortly I am off to bangkok to stay with friends and then of to Kuala Lumpur for no better reason than I have never been there and it’s close by. I will be returning to chilly, damp England on the 25th March for easter with my children and returning to nantucket for a couple of weeks shortly after that. No doubt the gray lady will be living up to her name when I get there!

It’s great to be able to keep in touch with nantucket news through your pages. I also find out news relevant to me personally, not the least of which is finding out through you who my new neighbours will be at 14 Centre.

Look forward to seing you soon and summer will behere before we know it!

All good wishes,
Paul Copson, Thomas Henry Gallery

Got to Ack in 1978, remember the Camera Shop and The Road House – Stormin’Norman and Suzie, NRBQ, GREAT mussels and music! Left Ack in 2002 and miss it so much. Your website and newsletter are bittersweet. I love it, but it hurts because I miss it so much. Love seeing all the old friends, though. Today is my daughter Megan’s 24th birthday. She was an emergency C-section delivered by Voodoo and a new guy – Tim Lepore. It was snowing and I was the only person in
the NCH maternity ward for 6 days! Life in Atlanta, GA is like living on another planet. Good and bad, but no ocean. Keep the pix and news coming.
Thanks, Lynne DeWald

Nantucketers in the News

Jeff & Cary Turner have purchased McAdoo Rugs and the Red Mill from Preston and Cynthia McAdoo, and plan to carry on the 34 year old tradition of McAdoo Rugs in the same manner as it has always been, keeping all employees and suppliers. Jeff is the nephew of Liz Williams, who has been dyeing wool at McAdoo Rugs for over 10 years. When he heard that the business was closing, he grabbed his family, headed to Vermont, and liked it so much, he bought the business. www.mcadoorugs.com.

The news that none of us wanted to hear: Fahey and Fromagerie is for sale. It’s highly unlikely, though not impossible, that it will ever be a market again. From the day I came in 1969 when it was Rabimbas’s (spelling may be incorrect), that portion of Pleasant Street always felt the most “New England-like” and green of all places on the island, with large deciduous trees embracing the roadside market. Michael and Jose and his wife did the best they could to keep it open. Jordan Real Estate has the listing at $1,579,000. Hey, Nantucket Land Bank. Can you buy this thing, and lease it back to someone like Jose, just to retain the historic character of the neighborhood?

Roger Seitz likes to fly under the radar. He wrote a novel that I don’t believe he ever tried to get published, but printed me out a copy on his computer when I asked to see it. Then he decided he wanted to be an auctioneer, so off he went to take a course and get his license. Now he’s started up a weekly live auction with one classified ad. It’s called Barnaby’s Auction – Saturdays in March at the Loft at Bartlett’s Farm. Preview from 10 to 2, and the auction begins at 3. Roger told me he has only committed through March 24th, but if enough people show up … For information and consigning, call Roger at 325-0077.

Coming up this weekend is the 8th Annual Kathi Ring Memorial Casino Night, with table gambling, raffles and a silent auction. The $15 admission includes a free raffle ticket, free buffet tables, DJ Bobby Lamb and the Bob Lehman Trio, and benefits the Nantucket Cottage Hospital. 508-825-8250 for information. Faregrounds Restaurant, Saturday, March 10, 7 to midnight.

Nantucket Historical Association Executive Director Bill Tramposch introduces ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ at the Nantucket Atheneum, presented as a part of the Nantucket Arts Council and the Atheneum ‘Books To Film’ series. Released in 1962, ‘To Kill A Mockingbird‘ is based on a Harper Lee novel of the same name. Through the eyes of ‘Scout,’ a feisty six-year-old tomboy the film carries us on an odyssey through the fires of prejudice and injustice in 1932 Alabama. Free Admission. Saturday, March 10, 7 pm.

For this upsoming edition of Armchair Theatre, Laura Byrne directs Kent Ludwig’s comedy “Moon Over Buffalo”, hosted by Bob & Nina Hellman at 4 Gay Street. Food & Beverage

Cisco Brewers now has a “We’re Booze Guys” van, an old Volkswagon bus, with the words painted on the side. It’s used in Boston as a moveable billboard. You’ll likely see it here this summer.

Annye’s Whole Foods is about to begin a series of cooking classes and demonstrations over there on Amelia Drive. The first takes place Thursday, March 15, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, entitled “Cooking For Flavor”. Each class will be paired with hosted wine tastings from Boston Wine Company, 3 wines per course, selected to complement the foods. The classes are designed for cooks who want to go beyond standars receipes.

In this first class, you’ll compare the merits of basic cooking techniques (roasting, grilling, sautéing); learn new ideas for grilled fruits & veggies, cheeses, composed salads, jeweled grains or pilafs, and fancy vegetable stacks. You’ll do a roasted chicken blind tasting, and try a sautee of beef Provencal and compare it with an Italian version.

The classes are $45 each. Reservations are limited. Call 508-228-4554 or stop by Annye’s at 16 Amelia Drive.

Books

Island resident Charles Soule takes on murder, terrorism and drug trafficking in a mystery drama set in Boston and Nantucket entitled In the Same Space. The book is about a Middle Eastern terrorist plot to stop the signing of a peace treaty that would establish a Palestinian state, a drama as current as the evening news.

As the attacks move deeper into Boston, average Joe and family man Jack Kendrick finds himself fighting for his life, battling drug traffickers, and struggling to prove his innocence in a high-profile murder case in which he’s the prime suspect.

In the Same Space is available at Bookworks.

Big Band Dance

On Saturday the 10th, the Nantucket School of Music Jazz Band and the NHA teamed up at the Whaling Museum to present swing music of the 1940′s, as played by the orchestras of Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Artie Shaw. Stacey Stuart greeted guests at the door with a bit of a twirl. Erik Wendelken conducted with style and pizzaz; Bob Lehman crooned a few while Diane Lehman on piano, almost invisible way in the back, smiled warmly at Bob’s antics. On the dance floor were our favorite show dancers, Clay and Audrey, right next to some students from the Nantucket High School Ballroom Dance Team.
