Nantucket Wine Festival Opening Reception

The 11th Annual Nantucket Wine Festival opened last night, a kind of soft opening for the
Festival itself.

This Week on Nantucket

Something slightly out of the ordinary at the Box tonight. I haven’t seen or heard these guys myself, but there’s a buzz about them.

First up is Jonny October, a singer/songwriter who attributes his music to both the folk music he enjoyed growing up (such as Harry Chapin and Gordon Lightfoot), and Hip Hop emcees such as Nas and KRS one. His music includes love songs, substance abuse jams, and the occasional politically charged protest anthem. Local DJ Count Sickle will accompany Jonny in his opening set with scratching and DJ jive.

Headlining is Louis Logic, also a singer/songwriter more than a rapper. His music ranges from lighthearted tougue in cheek pokes at the suburban middle class to booze anthems for the local barflys. He will be accompanied by turntable DJ JJ Brown, who brings a mix of samples and live instrumentation. Both recently signed a multi album record deal with the oldest name in indie Hip Hop, Fat Beats records.

Nantucket Wine Festival Update

SPECIAL EDITION - WINE FESTIVAL UPDATE

More than 2500 people are xpected to come to the island for this year’s festival, now among the best in the country, and a favorite of many of the winemakers and chefs. Here are some last minute notes and additions:

Reservations are still available for dinner tonight at Water Street: Michel-Schlumberger wine dinner with Mike Brunson, Winemaker. 6:30 pm reception, 7:00pm dinner. 508.228.7080.

For those attending the auction dinner, the catalogue can be found online.

Over at the Starlight, there will be a Plum TV Movie Premiere and Wine Tasting on Friday (18th) from 5pm to 7pm, and on the 19th from 4 to 7 pm, Cuturri Wines will show a DVD and sponsor a Wine Tasting.

The Cellar has lined up some special ‘Meet the Winemaker’ tastings for the festival: Thursday, May 17, 3 to 5: Michel Schlumberger, Dry Creek Valley, CA; Friday, May 18, 2 to 4: Kathleen Inman, Russian River Valley, CA; and Friday, May 19, 4 to 6: August Kesseler, Rheingau, Germany.

One of the most popular seminars year after year is the Three Amigos, comprised of long time friends Ming Tsai of PBS’s ‘Simply Ming’ & Blue Ginger of Wellesley;
Michael Schlow of Radius; and Seth Raynor of the Pearl & the Boarding House. Angela Raynor will pair wines with each of the chefs’ creations, and watch that the banter doesn’t get out of hand. This year features the wines of Santa Barbara’s Jim Clendenne’s Au Bon Climat and Bob Lindquist’s Qupe. If you can only make one seminar, this should be it. Friday, May 18, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

There are still tickets available for Sunday’s brunch at the White Elephantless crowded and more locals.

The Santa Barbara seminar and the Oyster seminar (moderated by Nantucket’s own shellfish grower Rob Garrison, with special guest Sandy Ingber, Executive Chef of New York’s famous Grand Central Oyster Bar) still have tickets available.

American Seasons Friday night Wine Dinner with Pax Winery still has a few seats left. Call 508 228 7111.

Slip 14 down on Straight Wharf is open for the Festival with a bistro menu Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm. The bar opens Thursday night.

David Halberstam

The words of David Halberstam, from N Magazine:

“The island has always been a great sanctuary for me. I’ve always felt protected here…. There is a real feeling of exhilaration and a sense of cleansing, to be able to work and then go out and fish with friends. What’s amazing is that I can write all summer, get a lot of work done and still feel as if I’ve been on vacation.

Every day I’m aware of the great sense of renewal that Nantucket has given me. Without it, I don’t think I would have had as rich a life, professionally or personally.”

The service for David Halberstam will take place on June 12 at the Riverside Church in Manhattan. No word on whether there will be a Nantucket service.

Palgrave Macmillan will publish “Creativity” this November. The book sets out to identify how creative methods work, written by creative people in a number of fields. David Halberstam is one of the contributors, along with Edward Albee, Chuck Close, Milton Glaser, Marvin Hamlish, Erica Jong, Spike Lee, Julie Taymor, and others. David chose the photograph taken by Fred Clow for the cover of N Magazine to accompany his article. That same photo by Fred was published in the recent issue of Time magazine.

More words on the passing of David Halberstam from Prenny Claflin.

“David Halberstam, walking Nantucket’s twilight streets, arm and arm with his beloved Jean, would always stop and take the time to talk. He was so much a part of our island. And in his greeting, you became the center of his world: your world became an adjunct to the world of war and politics, of sports icons and moments in atheletic endeavors that touched millions, of the world of giants of which he was one, and when you finally bid adieu, David had changed you. That moment was always beyond special.

“My lasting image of David will always be him boarding his Alden ocean-going scull, his single rowing shell, and on a calm and waning summer afternoon, I watched him as he heads out of Polpis Harbor, peacefully alone and at peace with the world as the water moves slowly behind his oars, and in those perfect puddles he leaves the complexities and agonies of the world behind, if but for a moment.

“We will sorely miss you David.”

From Lynne DeWald:
I was David and Jean Halberstam’s housekeeper for one
year on Nantucket. They were two of the
most gracious, unassuming and generous individuals
I’ve ever met. David would discuss books with me during his
morning coffee while I cleaned the kitchen
from Jean’s most excellent culinary adventures the
night before. Jean loved to talk food. They both loved
to talk about their daughter. They talked about their
friends more then themselves. They were not “I”
people. They offered me the use of their NY apartment
while they were out of country and David offered to
write a college reference letter for my daughter. Yes,
he was a great journalist and historian, but he was a
real person. His Koi pond was a thing of beauty he
enjoyed and I came to love it as well. David was an
astute observer of this world, but he was also a
wonderful human being who will be missed. I am shocked
and saddened by his sudden and violent departure from
us. Even at my most casual acquaintance with him, I’m
sad. Imagine how those who knew him well must feel.
Jean and Julie, I’m so sorry.

If you have any stories about David, please send for possible publication.
