June 9, 2007

BEST EVENT OF THE WEEK
The Chamber of Commerce presents the $10k Survivor Challenge, your chance to win $10,000, beginning with cocktails and snacks at 6:00 pm at Faregrounds. Tickets are $100, and are still available at the Chamber office, upstairs at 48 Main Street, or by phone with a credit card at 508-228-3643. You need not be present to win. Proceeds benefit the NICC scholarship funds for Nantucket students. $100 to win $10,000. With the odds at 1 in 250, it beats the lottery.

NIGHTLIFE
The headliner of the week is Maxi Priest at the Box tonight, starting after 10 p.m. Tickets are $30, and this appearance is likely to sell out. See Marli’s article in the Independent. From Marli’s article: “After Bob Marley, Priest was one of the first reggae artists to cross over into the American mainstream in the 1980s, with his cover of Cat Steven’s “Wild World,” his Billboard No. 1 hit “Close to You”, his duet with Shabba Ranks (”Housecall”) and his duet with Roberta Flack (”Set the Night to Music”). In 1996, he also topped the charts with reggae artist Shaggy for the single “That Girl.”

The Mighty Junkbus plays the Box from Thursday through Saturday. Then, billed as a band for an older audience than usually frequents the Muse, the Secret Service Band plays the Muse Friday night. Bill Schustik is in town with his traditional 18th & 19th-century music and classic sea chanteys, Saturday at 7:30 pm at the Whaling Museum. The Bob Lehman Trio is back at the Brant Point Grill (starting at 7:30) for the weekend before a few week hiatus. Jess Campbell (8 pm) and Jeff Ross (9:30 pm) share the bill at the Starlight on Friday and Saturday night. Jamie Howarth is at the Summer House Thursday through Saturday night.

CONCERTS
The Women’s Chorus of Nantucket directed by Marcia Hempel, featuring folk, jazz, and world music, will perform at the Unitarian Church, Sunday at 4:00 pm. “Students Dance and Music” combines a dance ensemble under Director and Choreographer Giovanna La Paglia, with the NCMC String Ensemble.
