Coming Up (6/7/07)
If you’re looking for something to do for a specific day, go right to the Arts and Social Calendar. Or here’s a summary of the highlights for the coming week.
NIGHTLIFE PICK OF THE WEEK
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, at the Box on Saturday and Sunday night.
Grace hails from Waitsfield, Vermont - some of you may know her parents: Sparky and Peggy Potter, who made many of the signs you see around the island, including the one they made for me, the schmaltz and gold leaf “Camera Shop” sign still hanging on Main Street.

Grace and her band have been here twice before - first through Sandy Walsh and theSpace about 3 years ago, then at the Box last year. It’s not that often a band goes from status unknown to playing Bonnaroo, the Newport Folk Festival, and opening for Trey Anastasio, Taj Mahal, and Dave Matthews in such a short amount of time. If you saw the band last year at the Box, you now they are that good. Bonnie Raitt said “One of the most soulful new bands around.” “This is an amazing band! Keep your eyes on this one” said Taj Mahal. The Improper Bostonian calls the band “Vermont’s hottest export since Phish.”

CRAFTS PICK OF THE WEEK
The Corning Museum of Glass is home to the world’s most comprehensive and celebrated collection of glass, with more than 45,000 objects reflecting 3,500 years of glassmaking history. The Hot Glass Roadshow was created in 2001 to showcase the art of glassmaking around the world - master glassmakers from The Corning Museum of Glass, working from a fully-equipped mobile facility, entertain and educate while creating works of art. One program is called “You Design It; We Make It,” inviting members of the audience to submit a sketch - then that sketch is turned into glass.
This week, the Dane Gallery is hosting “Hot Glass Nantucket”, featuring the Hot Glass Roadshow and the gallery’s best glass artists, on the site of the old Mad Hatter, the property donated by Nantucket Island Resorts. The 3 day show will include the “You Design It; We Make It” program, and is free to the public, but will accept donations to benefit the Artists Association’s children’s art programs.See the calendar for individual events.
