Autism Walk

WALK NOW FOR AUTISM

I’m one of the organizers for the upcoming Nantucket Walk Now for Autism to take place on Saturday, August 25th, beginning and ending at Jetties Beach. The walk will take about 30 minutes - check in time is 8:30 am, and the walk begins at 9:30. I’ll be walking and photographing.

Autism Speaks was founded by Nantucket summer residents Bob and Suazanne Wright. With over 1.5 million people in this country currently affected by autism in what is widely considered an epidemic of unknown causes, funds raised at this walk and others like it around the country will benefit autism research, and provide Nantucket with information and resources about autism. Every 20 minutes, a child is diagnosed with autism, a lifelong neurological disease that severly impairs the ability to communicate, respond to surroundings, and relate to others. 1 in 150 children in this country have the disease, more prevalent than childhood diabetes, cancer and AIDS combined.

Many of your friends and neighbors have already signed up for the Walk, and I hope you will join them and me on that day. There are already 100 people registered, with 30 teams. I would like to see at least 500 walkers that morning.

I’ve formed a team called “Team Gene”, and I hope you will join my team, whether you’re able to walk with us that day or not, and you can donate as much or as little as you wish.
