DJ Jamin’s Wedding Party

Well known DJ Jamin Murphy, who has spent 20 summers on Nantucket, wed Astrid Kallar and both now live in Malmo, in southern Sweden. They were married here on September 1st at Miacomet Beach. Astrid (in white below) arrived to the ceremony on a horse (thanks to Jeff Ross). A reception and afterparty was held at Malcolm’s crib, with deco by Jamin, and DJ’s from Nantucket, NYC, LA and Sweden. DJ Willy Lemay rocked the house with a classic set of original 80s remixes. Other DJs included Anna (Stockholm, Sweden), Billy Desmond, Devlin, Tony, Jamin, Blacksmith, Brad and others … Congratulations Jamin and Astrid!

The world’s most influential wine critic Robert Parker has twice named Jorge Ordoñez Wine Personality of the Year, and called him one of the most influential wine personalities of the past twenty years. Jorge imports Spain’s biggest, deepest wine portfolio to America. Ordoñez has changed the Spanish wine world, and especially the American view of Spanish wines. “When nobody cared about Spanish wines,” he claims proudly, “I was there.”

What does this have to do with Nantucket? Jorge will be in attendance is a very rare American appearance for the Nantucket Arts Council Night in Seville wine dinner, Thursday, September 20, at Cinco. The best in Spanish wines will be paired with a special Cinco menu of Spanish dishes. The evening will begin with a stroll through the tapas bars of ‘Seville’ sampling local Spanish delicacies al fresco on the Cinco patio, serenaded by the flamenco and classical guitar music of artist Bob Walder.

Then celebrity sommeliers from Nantucket’s premier restaurants will guide you through the intricacies of Spanish wines, grape varietals and winemaking regions. Internationally acclaimed artist Kerry Hallam’s painting, “A Night in Seville,” pictured below, will be auctioned. Then relax Spanish style by retiring to the bar or breezy patio to sip sparkling cava, listen to music and hang with friends until it’s time for a late night café solo or café con leche. Reserve your seats now by calling 508-325-8588. Seating is limited. $225 per person benefits the Nantucket Arts Council.

Spookie’s back. Spookie Daly Pride is back at the Box this weekend, Friday and Saturday nights.

Tickets are still available to the Nantucket AIDS Network Friendship Gala & Auction on Sunday, September 30, featuring The Village People.

The Gala will take place on the lawn at the White Elephant Hotel, overlooking Nantucket Harbor. Cocktails will begin at 5:00 p.m., followed by a five-star dinner, a live auction conducted by Rafael Osona, and dancing to the music of disco icons, the Village People. Call 228-3955 for tickets and information.

Josh Ritter

One of the most special nights of the summer was an evening spent listening to and meeting singer songwriter Josh Ritter, at a house concert on Saturday night, August 25th, brought to Nantucket through the efforts of Ed Romanoff, Sue Devine, and a dedicated group of other music lovers, pictured here with Josh.

Here are some photos of the audience just before the start and just as Josh got going. In the second photo, note Jesse Kornbluth in the lower left of the photo, and check out his website and newsletter called HeadButler.com, which as Jesse says is “founded on a simple proposition: There’s so much New Stuff you need help finding the Good Stuff.” And that he does, and Josh is one of Jesse’s recent favorites.

One of Josh’s most endearing traits is his smile, but particulary the one that comes over his face as he’s thinking of what to say next, and what he comes up with has already cracked him up, or that same impish smile after he’s just cracked up the audience. Here’s that look:

Josh’s music is beautiful, his playing finely crafted, and his lyrics filled with beauty and smart twists and turns of phrases. From the song he is best known for, ‘Kathleen’:

All the other girls here are stars-you are the Northern Lights.
They try to shine in through your curtains-you’re too close and too bright.
They try and they try but everything that they do
Is the ghost of a trace of a pale imitation of you.
I’ll be the one to drive you back home, Kathleen.
