Coming Up Beginning 3/14/08

Events for Friday (14th) through Thursday (20th):

BENEFITS
Black jack, roulette, texas hold’em, silent auction, buffet and Bri-Guy, all at the Kathi Ring Casino Night. $15 tickets at the door. Benefits Visiting Nurses, Family and Children Services, A Safe Place, Nantucket AIDS Network, and other health organizations. Saturday, March 15, starting at 7:00 pm at the Rose & Crown.


ST. PATRICK’S DAY
Kitty’s is making a weekend of it, with Irish specialties like Corned Beef & Cabbage all weekend. Live music every afternoon from 2 to 5, Saturday through Monday, with PJ Moody, Joel Finn, and 4 Easy Payments. Saturday and Sunday night it’s The ShepCats from 9 to close. Monday night showcases Frank Hunter & Aaron Castellano as Bonafide playing the hot sof the 80’s and 90’s with an Irish accent.

Faregrounds is putting on a Pre-St. Patrick’s Day all you can eat Buffet Sunday night from 5 to 9, with PJ Moody beginning at 6. PJ will also play Monday night from 6 to 9.


CONCERTS AND NIGHTLIFE
Canadian singer songwriter Katherine Wheatley is a member of the band ‘Betty’ and ‘The Bobs’, and plays guitar in ‘The Smoking Section’. She will perform with New School students she taught this past week. More on the concert. Friday, March 14, 6:00 pm, Nantucket New School.

The Shingles are back - with Dave Provost, Andy Bullington, Michael Kopko, Chris Westerlund and Cary Hazlegrove playing bluegrass, folk standards, and original compositions. Saturday, March 15, 7:00 pm, Great Hall. Free.

The Box continues their salute to local bands this week. First its Jake Vos with Two Days Notice - Joel on bass, Jake keys, Andy C. guitar, and Tommy D. drums. Friday, March 14, 9:00 pm, Chicken Box.

Then on Saturday night, The Undergraduates are up first, followed by 2 Days Notice. Cover charge just $2 dollars (a buck a band). More info.

The Nantucket School of Music Student Recital takes place this Thursday, March 20, 6:00 pm at the Bartlett’s Farm Hayloft. Free.

At the Rose & Crown, it’s Poker Night on Monday’s, Trivia Quiz Night every Tuesday (at 7 pm), karaoke on Thursday (9pm).


THEATER

The Theatre Workshop presents Richard Dresser’s comedy “Rounding Third“, starring Chuck Gifford and Chris Witte, and directed by Laura Gallagher Byrne. Runs Thursdays through Saturdays until March 29th.


FOOD
The topic is Easter Baking at the Bartlett’s Spring Farm Talk. Learn how to make Morning Glory muffins, sticky buns, lemon curd, lemon curd tartlets and shortbread cookies. Free. Saturday, March 15, 10:00 am.


POLITICS
Town officials and citizen sponsors will explain key articles on this year’s Warrant for Annual Town Meeting. Refreshments served. Hosted by the Nantucket Civic League. Saturday, March 15, 11:00 am, Great Hall.


LECTURE

Bill Tramposch will speak on “New Zealand and Nantucket“. Thursday, March 20, noon til 1 pm at the Whaling Museum. Details.


POETRY
Spoken Word Nantucket, the Poetry Reading Series, this week features Poet Eric ‘Zork’ Alan, and the theme of the day is ‘Poets Against War’. Sunday, March 16, 2 to 4 pm at the Umass Boston Field Station. Free. Details.


FILM

Peter’s Vietnam is a documentary by island filmmaker John Stanton, a short film about islander Peter Sylvia and his experience serving in the military during the war in Vietnam. Following the screening Stanton and Sylvia will discuss the film and take questions from the audience. Wednesday, March 19, 7:00 pm at the Great Hall; free.

The Moon
New Moon: March 7, 12:14 pm
First Quarter: March 14, 6:46 am
Full Moon: March 21, 2:40 pm
Last Quarter: March 29, 5:47 pm

Planets
Mercury: May be observable with binoculars in the glow of sunrise at the beginning of the month.
Venus: Quickly approaches the Sun and will be still observable only in the first half of the month, close to Mercury, in the glow of sunrise.
Mars: An all-night object (in Taurus).
Jupiter: Higher and higher in the eastern part of the sky, before the sunrise.
Saturn: An all-night object (in Leo).

Meteor Showers
No spectacular meteor showers until April-May

Comets
Comet Holmes, which flared up in October 2007 and was visible to an unaided eye for more than two months, is now much weaker and can only be photographed with a telescope.

The Nantucket Sky” is generously provided at the beginning of each month by the Maria Mitchell Observatory, 4 Vestal Street. Thank you to Executive Director Janet E. Schulte for proposing this idea, and to Astronomer Vladimir Strelnitski for the report.
