Coming Up on Nantucket Beginning 5/9/08
Arts and social events for Friday (5/9) through Thursday (5/15):
The Nantucket Wine Festival opens on Wednesday. Look for a complete summary here early next week. Many of the events are sold out, but there are two of note with tickets still available.
For Texas Throwdown, Kevin Williamson brings his unique new-wave, old-boy style to Nantucket with three different interpretations of Texas game and beef. Paired with Kevin will be the award-winning wines of Cliff Lede Vineyards in Stags Leap, presented by Vice President and General Manager Jack Bittner. White Elephant Main Tent, Wednesday (14th), 7pm-8:30pm (SEM-01)
Entertaining with Sparkling Cocktails is an exploration of the history of classic Champagne cocktails as well as modern interpretations. Proprietor Garrett Harker and Master Mixologist Jackson Cannon, both of Boston’s wildly popular Eastern Standard Kitchen & Drinks, will teach you how to enrich any occasion with revived classic or distinctive original sparkling cocktail recipes. White Elephant Shoreline Tent, Friday (16th) 1pm-2pm. (SEM-23).

BENEFITS and NON-PROFIT EVENTS
The Marla Lamb Cancer Travel Fund benefit is Saturday, May 10, beginning at 5:00 pm at Faregrounds Restaurant. Details.
The Rotary Club of Nantucket is sponsoring a MotherÕs Day Breakfast Buffet, Sunday, May 11th from 8 to 11 at Faregrounds. $7 gets you all you can eat, and it’s not just pancakes. Details.
NIGHTLIFE & CONCERTS

Thomas Jones performs ‘Opera to Broadway’ on Sunday, May 11, at 4:00 pm in the Old North Vestry in the Congregational Church.
Jones, a Boston-based baritone, has appeared with orchestras, opera companies, choral ensembles and on recital series throughout North America, Europe and the West Indies. The Boston Globe calls the vocal and stage presence of Jones “irresistible” and the New York Times proclaims that he sings “with plush sounds and musical vigor.” Jones will be accompanied on the piano by Ben Green in this concert produced by the Nantucket Arts Council. Amy England is back from touring the country, and will perform here one night only: Saturday, May 10th at 7 in the Great Hall. She’ll throw in a few lullabies for Mother’s Day, and her CD’s will be available for purchase after the concert.
Joshua Tree, a U2 cover band, is at the Box Friday and Saturday night.
The AM Group, last year regularly at the Rose & Crown, now spins every Saturday night at the Muse through October, with ÒDrop: Local Flavor from Local DJÕsÓ House music. Details. Video.
At the Rose & Crown, it’s Poker Night on Monday’s, Trivia Quiz Night every Tuesday (at 7 pm), Karaoke on Thursday (9 pm), and DJ Bri Guy on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Youth Jazz Band concert originally scheduled for Saturday, May 10, at 4:00 pm has been cancelled.
GALLERIES
The Junior Artists Show #2 is Sunday, May 11, from 4 to 6 at the Artists Association of Nantucket, when high school students show their work from the past year.
THEATER AND PERFORMANCE
Held over one last weekend: Doubt, A Parable, a play by John Patrick Shanley, continues its run at the Methodist Church. The performance is directed by Michael Feeney, and features Ciaran Byrne, Pam Murphy, Callahan Keever, and Tina Hoskins. Curtain at 7:30. Friday May 9th - Saturday May 10th. Details.

BOOKS, TALKS & WORKSHOPS
It’s Proven Winners and New Programs at Bartlett’s Farm. Heather Poire of Pleasant View Gardens will talk about what containers and container plants will be ÔhotÕ for this season, and new programs. Saturday, May 10, 10:00 am.
WALKS AND TOURS
For Nantucket Preservation Month, The Nantucket Preservation Trust presents an Architectural Walking Tour of Main Street, Friday, May 9th and 23rd at 10:00 am. Also a Sconset Architectural Walking Tour: May 16th and 30th at 4 pm. Details.
FILM
The Nantucket Atheneum presents Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey, Monday, May 12, at 7. Leon Theremin is the secret link between sci-fi films, the Beach Boys, and Carnegie Hall. He invented the eponymous electronic musical instrument - the first of its kind - that provides the foundation for today’s electronic music. Details.
At the Starlight, it’s Speed Racer all week. Friday at 7:00 and 9:30, Saturday at 3:00, 7:00 and 9:30, Sunday at 5:00 and 7:30, and the rest of the week at 7:30.
