Sixty Years Ashore: A George Thomas Retrospective Opening Reception
Saturday, March 14, 5:00 – 7:00 pm, Artists Association of Nantucket, 19 Washington Street

An exhibition celebrating the artistic life of George Thomas by The Artists Association of Nantucket. George Thomas joined the AAN at age fifteen, and is now in his 60th year as a member. George has had several careers as an artist: photographer, printmaker, art teacher, watercolorist,
and pastel painter. Relying on a combination of works borrowed from private collectors, from the AAN Permanent Collection, and from George’s personal archives, the show will span all six decades of his artistic life. The show runs March 14-29, 2009 and is free to the public.

“The Village of New Guinea in the Nation of Nantucket: Ten Years Later”

Doug Charron will speak about his Nantucket forebears, their connection with the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, of which he is an enrolled member. Mr. Charron is a descendent of the Nantucket Pompey Family. Mr. Charron will also comment on his ancestors from Virginia; the struggle for school integration in Virginia in the 1950s; and the significance of the inauguration of President Obama two hundred years after the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Will talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres be living here someday? In the latest issue of Ladies Home Journal, she says that she and Portia de Rossi are “looking for the right place to have a farm – Someplace like Massachusetts or Nantucket, with seasons. We could get an 1800s farmhouse with land and rescue animals.” Ellen’s current contract expires in 2010.

The Nantucket Culinary Arts students, under the direction of Bob Buccino, have won the Massachusetts Prostart cooking competition, enabling them to go to the national competition in San Diego. The trip will cost a total of $8000. The Nantucket Culinary Arts Foundation has donated $2000, and the students are trying to raise money, but more is needed. Consider making a tax deductible donation to the Nantucket Culinary Arts Foundation. Contact Jenny Garneau at ackess@nantucket.net.

The Food Pantry is looking for volunteer Spanish speaking translators from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call 508-228-7438 or go by 20 Fair St. (down outside basement stairs).

And while we’re on the Food Pantry, Mary Beth Splaine sent this idea along: She and Jack Weinhold had a potluck dinner recently, and asked each guest to bring, in addition to the usual dish to share, a donation of food for the food pantry. Mary Beth and Jack then delivered the donated food to the Food Pantry the following Tuesday. This is something we can all do this winter, and the food is needed more this winter than usual.

The U.S. Mint, in a nationwide program, has asked Governor Patrick to select one preferred and three alternate Massachusetts national sites to be featured on the reverse of a quarter. Beginning in 2010, the Mint will release five new quarter designs annually based on the order in which the selected sites gained federal designation. Governor Patrick is calling on the people of Massachusetts to help with this decision. Nantucket has two sites that qualify: Jethro Coffin House, and Sankaty Head Light. Vote here.
