4th of July Fireworks
The fireworks are scheduled for the 4th of July, beginning just about 9 pm, weather permitting, sponsored by Nantucket Visitor Services. A decision based on the weather will be made at 6 pm that day in conjunction with the Nantucket Fire Department, the Marine Department and the Nantucket Police Department. PlumTV Channel 22 and Geno TV 17 will post the status of the fireworks, or call Nantucket Visitor Services at 508-228-0925. Rain date is the next evening Sunday, July 5, at 9:00 PM.
A roped off section of the beach will be closed due to the nesting Piping Plovers but other parts of the beach will be open to the public for watching. The Charles Street public way will be closed the evening of the event. Enter through the main entrance near the Jetties Pavilion building.
The NRTA will operate the Jetties Beach Bus Route on its normal schedule on July 4th. leaving town from Broad Street (in front of the Whaling Museum) every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour from 10 AM to 6 PM. Beginning at 6:00 PM Jetties Beach Route buses will leave town approximately every 15 minutes. The Jetties Beach stop will be at the corner of Bathing Beach Road and Hulbert Avenue.
After the event buses will depart Bathing Beach Road and Hulbert Avenue and return to Broad Street approximately every 20-30 minutes. These buses will load, go to Broad Street and will return to Bathing Beach Road and Hulbert Avenue until 11:00 p.m.
As everyone leaves the beach at the same time after the event as there is heavy congestion in the area, we ask for your cooperation and patience as you wait for the buses to return.
At the Communal Choral Reading of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, Sat, Jul 4, 2009 from 9 – 10 am, Unitarian Church, children will be able to sign a replica of the Declaration of Independence. Raffle – the first prize winner will climb the steeple to view the old Portuguese bell and ring in another year of freedom. A sidewalk organ grinder will play traditional patriotic tunes on an 1880’s Celestina.
Activities on Main Street, 10 AM -12 PM: Dunk tank, watermelon and pie eating contests, face painting, and puppets. Sponsored by Parks & Recreation Commission.
Children’s Games at 3 PM: Races, Tug-of-War. Sponsored by Parks & Recreation Commission, Children’s Beach, Harborview Way.
