Surfing Noel’s Waves

The remnants of hurricane Noel turned into a powerful nor’easter. A handful of surfers were out the next day to take advantage of some of the best surf of the year.

The Maria Mitchell Association sent over these photos taken by Cheryl Beaton of the installation of the new 24″ research grade telescope.The telescope and operating systems, weighing over 1,500 pounds, began to be hoisted into place by crane through the observatory dome’s 42″ wide slit opening at 2 p.m. on April 11th. MMA’s open night program series at Loines Observatory will resume May 11 when a public opening event for the community will be held to view the research telescope and the restored 8″ Clark telescope, which is being re-installed at the observatory.
