Arts and social events for Friday (6/6) through Thursday (6/12):


Island resident Connor Gifford talks about his new book, “America According to Connor Gifford”, written with Victoria Harris, which just hit the island this week and goes national on July 4th weekend, published by Hargrave Press. Tim Russert calls the 168 page book “a distinctive American perspective by a unique young man.” Nathaniel Philbrick says, “Connor Gifford has written my kind of history – fun and inspiration.” And Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara call it a “must read!”. The 2008 Chamber 10K Survivor Challenge offers a chance to win up to $10,000, and you don’t have to be a Chamber member to attend. The prize winner is determined by a process of elimination. When ten names are left, the ‘survivors’ can choose to split $10,000 ten ways or continue the elimination, and so on. Tickets are $100 each, available at the Chamber office, upstairs at Zero Main Street. No more than 250 tickets will be sold and you need not be present to win. Proceeds benefit the Chamber scholarship fund for Nantucket students. Faregrounds Restaurant, Thursday, June 12th, 6:00 pm.


The Sam Sylvia Pro-Am Golf Tournament Pairings Cocktail Party, Dinner and Auction benefits the Boys & Girls Club. Yacht Club, Saturday (7th).

The Maria Mitchell Association Opening Tea and Annual Meeting takes place on Tuesday, June 10th at 4:30. Details.


Heng-Jin Park, piano; Paris Ellsworth, violin; and Jonah Ellsworth, cello, presented by the Nantucket Arts Council. Sunday, June 8th, 5 pm at the Coffin School. Details.


Alicia Gardner, singer, songwriter, and guitar player with covers and originals. Every Friday, Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at Jetties Restaurant, 5:30 – 8:30. The A.M. Group plays House Music from 7 – 10 on Sundays. Andy Bullington and Tom Stoddart play acoustic blues and harmonica every Tuesday from 5:30 – 8:30.

At the Box, Three Day Threshold plays The Rolling Stones, The Pogues, Little Feat and Johnny Cash and more through Saturday, the 6th. U2 cover band Joshua Tree plays Monday through Wednesday (9th – 11th). Then it’s Emergency Broadcast System Thursday through Saturday (12th – 14th).

The AM Group, last year regularly at the Rose & Crown, now spins every Saturday night at the Muse through October, with “Drop: Local Flavor from Local DJ’s” House music. Details. Video. This weekend it’s
Chad Strange, one of the original dj’s who created the scene that started over 15 years ago on Nantucket, and is now a producer under Ominis Records. Also one set by Alex Buletz, a new DJ on island, playing progressive and electro.

At the Rose & Crown, it’s Poker Night on Monday’s, Trivia Quiz Night every Tuesday (at 7 pm), 80’s Video Dance Party on Wednesday, Karaoke on Thursday (9 pm), Disco Night on Friday, Top 40 Video Dance Party on Saturday, and the 2008 Summertime Karaoke Contest on Sundays.

Jeff Ross is back at the Startlight on Frdiay and Saturday nights from 9 to midnight.

Oldest House Kitchen Garden Tour of the herbs and plants in this 1700s kitchen garden. Friday and Saturday, June 6th – 7th, 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm, 16 Sunset Hill Lane.
