Coming Up Beginning 6/27/08

Arts and social events for Friday (6/27) through Thursday (7/3):

The Nantucket Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market opens for the season this Saturday, June 28, from 9 am to noon at the Dreamland Theater Parking Lot. Look for locally grown produce and handmade goods, all sponsored by Sustainable Nantucket.

Now an annual right of summer, the Book Release Party for Elin Hilderbrand’s new book, “A Summer Affair”, is Tuesday, July 1, from 6:30 to 8 pm at Cisco Brewery. Elin’s novel “Barefoot” has just been released in paperback and is currently #7 on the NY Times Bestseller List. Elin will read at 7:00 pm. Booksigning to follow. Complimentary refreshments.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals come to the Box Monday and Tuesday (30th and 1st), one of the best bands that comes to the Box each year. “One of the most soulful new bands aroundÓ – Bonnie Raitt. ÒThis is an amazing band! Keep your eyes on this oneÓ – Taj Mahal.

Newly christened and redesigned, the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum opens to the public with a Renovation Celebration on Tuesday, July 1, at 6:00 pm at 158 Polpis Road. The collection has been organized in a more coherent way, so even if you’ve been before, pay another visit this summer.


Sweetmeat and the Silverfish CD Release Party: Saturday, June 28, 3 to 5 at Cisco Brewery. Meet and listen to the band. Free valet parking or ride your bike to the party and receive discounts on merchandise and CDs.

Jake Vohs Organ Trio. Sunday, June 29, 6 to 9 at The Muse.

NCMC Student Recital: Macy Smith, Soprano with Robby Behrman, Piano. Saturday, June 28, 5:00 pm at the First Congregational Church. Details.

Unitarian Choir: “Love Songs”, including popular, jazz and world music. Thursday, July 3, at noon at the Unitarian Church. Details.

The AM Group, last year regularly at the Rose & Crown, now spins every Saturday night at the Muse through October, with “Drop: Local Flavor from Local DJ’s” House music. Details. Video.

At the Rose & Crown, it’s Poker Night on Monday’s, Trivia Quiz Night every Tuesday (at 7 pm), 80’s Video Dance Party on Wednesday, Karaoke on Thursday (9 pm). Simon Simple’s White Night: A.M. Group DJ’s on Friday (27th), Top 40 Video Dance Party on Saturday, and the 2008 Summertime Karaoke Contest on Sundays.

Jeff Ross is back at the Starlight on Friday and Saturday nights from 9 to midnight. Jeff will also be at the Ropewalk on Thursday nights.

Alicia Gardner, singer, songwriter, and guitar player with covers and originals. Every Friday, Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at Jetties Restaurant, 5:30 – 8:30. The A.M. Group plays House Music from 7 – 10 on Sundays. Andy Bullington and Tom Stoddart play acoustic blues and harmonica every Tuesday from 5:30 – 8:30.

The Bob Lehman Trio holds forth at the Brant Point Grill on Friday and Saturday nights.

Jamie Howarth is at the piano every Wednesday through Saturday night at The Summer House.

At the Box, Sex Toy Party plays Thursday through Saturday nights, the 26th – 28th. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals play Monday and Tuesday night.


On the Isle, a non-profit community arts group, will hold auditions on July 1st for its primary amateur/professional musical, ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. Tuesday, July 1, at 7 at the ‘Sconset Casino. Details.

An Evening of Songs and Celebration by the Theatre Workshop: Wednesday, July 2, at 5, at the home of Stephanie Speakman, 75 Hulbert Avenue. The production stars Simon Gleeson & Natalie OÕDonnell, accompanied by Diane Lehman. Details.

Theatre Workshop of Nantucket presents “Sylvia”, by A.R Gurney, a play about a dog, the couple who adopt her, and the drama that results. Tickets – $25. Wednesday June 25th – Saturday 28th: 8:30 pm.
