Seconds Shop One Day Sale

Everything except jewelry for $1 at the Seconds Shop, Friday, February 26 from 10 to 3 only. Proceeds benefit Family and Childrens Services. Donations accepted daily.

2010 Nantucket Triathlon

Jamie Ranney, Race Director for the 2010 Nantucket Triathlon, has announced that fewer than 100 spots remain in the 750 person field. Registration is expected to close out in the next few weeks. The winning time last year for the 1/4 mile swim, 13 mile bike, 5K run was just over an hour. The race takes place on Saturday July 10, 2010 at Jetties Beach with a 12:00 PM start time. By the way, volunteers are needed for all aspects of the race. Enter or volunteer here.

Google Will Wire Some Communities with Ultra Fast Broadband

One of Google’s goals is to make fast internet access available at a competitive price to more people, and has annouced that, as an experiment, it will set up a fiber-optic network in one or several trial locations. Learn more, and nominate Nantucket.

Nantucket History Quiz Bowl

Island author Nat Philbrick will be the Quiz Master for the first Nantucket History Quiz Bowl to take place at 6 pm, Saturday, March 6 at the Nantucket Whaling Museum. Teams of all ages with up to 3 people will compete for prizes. Questions cover all aspects of Nantucket history, including people, geography, architecture, whaling, and historic places. Prizes for the winning team. Free admission. $15 per team member; teams may have up to 3 members. 1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts

Nominate your favorite place in the state (Nantucket of course) for possible inclusion on the “1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts” list. One goal of this program is to increase the number of visitors coming to the state.
The results will be announced in May. Only one nomination per person will be accepted; the deadline is April 1, 2010. Nominate Nantucket now.

Nantucket is the healthiest county in Massachusetts according to The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Factors considered were:

  • Health Behaviors: tobacco use, diet and exercise, unsafe sex, and alcohol use
  • Health Outcomes: how long people live and how healthy people feel while alive.
  • Mortality: how long people live; deaths before age 75
  • Birth Outcomes: babies born with a low birthweight
  • Clinical Care: access to care, quality of care
  • Social and Economic Factors: education, employment, income, family and social support, community safety
  • Physical Environment: environmental quality, built environment

Geoffrey and Elizabeth Thayer Verney Fellowship

Elizabeth Watts Pope has been awarded The Nantucket Historical Association E. Geoffrey and Elizabeth Thayer Verney Fellowship for 2010. Pope’s chosen topic will be the life and work of Phebe Folger Coleman (1771–1857), a Nantucket diarist, watercolorist, poet, needlework instructor, and creator of the well-known “Nantucket sampler” style. Pope is a scholar who works as the Head of Readers Services at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Mass. Established in 1999, the Verney Fellowship supports research in the collections of the Nantucket Historical Association and other Nantucket repositories.
