Shoes for Haiti

Shoes for Haiti

After the Haiti earthquake, Simon Shurey wanted to help in some way, and while running, he hit upon the idea of Shoes for Haiti. He created a group on Facebook and contacted the local athletic community. Nantucket New School got in touch with Simon, and he met with Matt Liddle and several students – Phibee Pohl, Grace Jensen, and Abby Visco. Nantucket New School became the collection center for the shoes. Within a few days, Westmoor Club, Annye’s, the Rose and Crown, Great Harbor Yacht Club, Nantucket High School and the Lighthouse School volunteered as other drop off points.

As of last week, Shoes for Haiti had collected 1000 pairs of shoes weighing 950 lbs, packaged in 32 boxes. The shoes will be going to either Soles for Souls in Alabama, or will be sent to Haiti directly. Simon thanks everyone involved with what for him was a truly memorable and touching experience. Nantucket High School will continue the shoe drive in March.
