Hospital Thrift Shop opening for donations
The Hospital Thrift Shop, 17 India Street, will open for donations only beginning Monday, April 5 from 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. The Thrift Shop opens for the season on Monday, May 17 at 9:30 a.m, and benefits the Nantucket Cottage Hospital. To volunteer for a few hours a week, call 508-228-1125.

“The Nantucket Experience” Chance of a Lifetime Auction
The Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce has come up with a unique fundraising idea they’re calling “The Nantucket Experience (As Only Insiders See It)”, aimed primarily at visitors to the island who want an experience they would never have other than being the winning bidder.

The winners of this one-of-a-kind package for four will feel like visiting celebrities and honored guests for the Nantucket Daffodil Festival from Friday, April 23 through Sunday, April 25, 2010. The package includes a special place near the head of the Antique Car Parade, judging festival events, the Tailgate Picnic in ‘Sconset, three days and two nights at the Jared Coffin House, dining in some of the island’s finest restaurants, free transportation to and from the island and Hyannis, and a private brunch and book signing with nationally-known romance novelist and New York Times best seller Elin Hilderbrand.

Update on “Shoes for Haiti”

Simon Shurey reports that more than 700 pairs of shoes donated by islanders are on the way to Haiti in a ship container, along with food, old tires, cribs, bedding, food, generators, school desks, and gardening equipment, some of which was donated by Nantucketers.

Nantucket Arts Council Scholarships
The Nantucket Arts Council will be awarding 2010 scholarships to year-round graduating high school seniors who wish to continue their education in the arts at the college level. The Council supports study in the fields of music, dance, literature, drama, and the visual arts. Scholarships will be awarded to students attending accredited institutions and majoring in the arts. Selections for scholarships will be made based on recommendations, interviews, and examples of candidate’s work and merits. Applications must be postmarked on or before April 1, 2010.
