This Weekend on Nantucket

Here are my recommendations for the next few days:

The Chicken Box presents The Wailers on Monday and Tuesday nights, who, together with Bob Marley, have sold more than 250 million albums worldwide. The Wailers have also played or performed with international acts like Sting, the Fugees, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, and Alpha Blondy, as well as reggae legends such as Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Burning Spear. This is the real deal, and the shows will sell out – there were still tickets available as of yesterday. Pick up your tickets at The Chicken Box now. Showtime is generally around 10:30 to 11 pm.

This Saturday will be a perfect day for the family – Autism Walk at 9:30, Atheneum celebration from 10 to 2, and the Nantucket Music Festival from 2 to 6.

The 3rd Annual Nantucket Walk Now for Autism this Saturday, August 22, at Jetties Beach. This is a true family event for an important cause, with children’s activities, refreshments, music and a 1.5-mile awareness walk. The walk raises funds to support the Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center and to fund autism research, family services resources, advocacy and awareness. You can still register at: www.walknowforautism.org/nantucket, or on Saturday morning from 8:30 to 9:30 am at the Jetties. Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. See below some of the best photos from last year’s event.

The Nantucket Music Festival is a new free event, and another totally family friendly gathering. It’s this Saturday, August 22, from 2 – 6:00 pm at the High School Football Field. The Festival will feature Country Rock Star Dan Evans, voted most popular player of the 2008 NBC hit “The Biggest Loser.” The singer-songwriter released his debut contemporary-country with a rock edge album, “Goin’ All Out”, just about a year ago, where it promptly moved to number 7 on the Billboard’s Top Current Country Album Charts, and 57 on Billboard’s all-genre Top 200. Opening Festival acts will include island bands Jazz on the Rocks, A Perfect Day, and Sweetmeat and the Silverfish.

The Nantucket Atheneum’s 175th Anniversary Celebration takes place this Saturday, August 22, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. It includes a Book Parade starting at 9:45 at Pacific National Bank, a birthday cake contest, book making for all, music, free hot dogs, lemonade and of course birthday cake. Under a tent in the Atheneum Garden, rain or shine.

The Geschke Lecture Series presents Lesley Stahl on Monday, August 24, at 8 pm at the Unitarian Church. She’ll be talking about her experiences covering Washington for more than 20 years and her book ‘Reporting Live’. Lesley Stahl has been a 60 Minutes correspondent since March 1991, and has served as CBS News White House correspondent during the Carter and Reagan presidencies and part of the term of George H. W. Bush. Her reports appeared frequently on the CBS Evening News, first with Walter Cronkite, then with Dan Rather, and on other CBS News broadcasts. $25 admission. Tickets available at the Atheneum, 1 India Street.

“Cocktails, Conversation and a Mystery” is one of a series of smaller events from A Safe Place, leading the way with their new and timely approach to fundraising. Tonight will be an indoor cocktail party with cocktails, conversation and sunset. Nantucket author Elin Hilderbrand will read from her new book, The Castaways. Tickets are $50, available at (508) 228-0561. It’s tonight, Friday, August 21, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm at the home of Judith and Dan Drake on Warren’s Landing Road.
