Summer Isle by Del Wynn
SUMMER ISLE
By Del Wynn
The fiery orb ignited
The torch to morning sky,
set to flame the darkness of the night.
A new day at its dawning,
feline stretch and yawning,
seagulls loudly calling,
rise and shine.
Spring lines cast from bollards
as the ferry slips her berth,
gentle breeze blowing to her stern.
Klaxon blares a warning,
massive engines churning,
the ferry’s bow is turning
out to sea.
Come the joggers and the walkers
huff and puff, their cheeks aglow
as the slothful lie dreaming in their beds.
At first light the wary slumber
unconcerned and unencumbered
They’re among the many numbered
Still asleep.
A Marsh Hawk soars this morning
as the sun ascends the sky,
bearing feral witness to this da.
A summer’s day is a treasure,
a transcendental pleasure,
“God I love this weather.”
It’s summertime.

Nantucket Arts Festival 2008
Tomorrow is the opening of the Nantucket Arts Festival. Here are some photos of last year’s events which haven’t been published before. This first set is from the Festival Signature Exhibition entitled “Departures and Diversions: Exploring New Directions in the Visual Arts.” This year’s exhibition is entitled “Challenges and Chance Encounters: Expecting the New / Encountering the Unexpected” which will focus on visual arts not often seen in island galleries, explore new ways of seeing, and encourage those artists who have shifted direction from what is safe though successful expression to a more adventuresome and risk-taking manner. The exhibition opens on Friday, August 28 at 6 pm with an opening reception. Hours during the week are noon – 8 pm through September 6.
Nantucket Arts Festival 2008 – Part 4
Below are photos from the 2008 Red Carpet Premiere of “Detention with Oliver Diamond” at Preservation Hall, a series of 30 minute television shows for children, written, story boarded, and then performed by children. In conjunction with the showing of the series, the Festival also presented the interactive exhibit “10 Years in Detention, the Making of ‘Detention with Oliver Diamond'”, showcasing the original hand-written concept, the kid-written scripts and storyboards, deleted scenes, still photos from production, and props from the production.
